Container movement grew steadily in both directions on the Asia/Europe trade in July 2011, according to Container Trades Statistics Ltd. of the U.K. Westbound shipments from Asia to Europe increased 7.65% to 1,301,000 TEUs from the 1,208,600 TEUs moved a year earlier, reaching the 1.3-million-TEU line for the first time since January 2011. Eastbound containers from Europe to Asia rose 6.69% from 475,000 TEUs to 506,800 TEUs.

On the other hand, the trade was not favorable in terms of freight rates. The index for freight rates for westbound services (the average rate of 2000=100 points) was 74 points in the month in question, having decreased constantly since it hit an all-time high of 116 points in August 2010.

On an accumulated basis, 8,179,000 TEUs were transported from Asia to Europe from January to July 2011, up 5.5% year on year, 3,476,000 TEUs from Europe to Asia, up 5.6%.
