The overall volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping lines during the first six months (January-June) of 2011 on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 Asian countries and regions) was 6.54 million TEUs, going up 4.3% from the 6.27 million TEUs moved a year earlier.

Owing to decreases in various commodities in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, exports from Japan incurred a double-digit decline, plunging 10.2% to 1.005 million TEUs. Imports hiked 2.4% to 1.182 million TEUs.

In June 2011 alone, the total improved 4.6% from the corresponding month of 2010 to 1.13 million TEUs.

Exports from Japan plummeted 12.1% to 170,000 TEUs, registering a year-on-year fall for four months in a row, or since March.

Imports went down 6.8% to 187,000 TEUs, suffering a decrease for the second consecutive month.
