Overall volume of freight handled at Chinese ports in the first half (January-June) of 2011 was 4.42 billion tons, going up 16.3% from a year earlier, according to a report compiled by China’s Ministry of Transport.

In breakdown, domestic cargoes accounted for 3.09 billion tons, up 15.6%, and international cargoes, 1.33 billion tons, up 8%.

Containerized shipments were also brisk, amounting to 77.7 million TEUs, up 12.9%.

Cargoes transported in overland services totaled 13.1 billion tons, up 14.7% (2.3379 trillion ton-kilometers, up 16.3%), while those moved in waterway services, 20.1 billion tons, up 15% (3.5982 trillion ton-kilometers, up 16.7%).
