The River Rhine reopened last week to shipping in both directions for the first time since January 13 when a barge chartered by BASF SE carrying sulfuric acid produced by the company capsized on a narrow bend of the river south of the German city of Koblenz. Efforts to secure the barge had been hampered by unusually higher water levels.
The Rhine is a key waterborne route to Rotterdam, allowing shipment of goods from bulk and liquid cargoes to containers.
