The combined volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping lines on the intra-Asia trade in September 2010 amounted to 1,039,000 TEUs, increasing a mere 1.9% from the 1,020,000 TEUs transported a year earlier.

Exports from Japan were sluggish, rising only 1.7% to 173,000 TEUs, with contributing factors including those to Hong Kong and Taiwan, both of which declined year on year.

Imports to Japan were also stagnant across the board, improving 2.8 percent to 203,000 TEUs.

On an accumulated scale, the total volume on the trade managed to maintain a double-digit increase for the first nine months of 2010, surging 11.3% to 9,429,000 TEUs from the 8,469,000 TEUs moved during the corresponding nine months of 2009.

Exports from Japan went up 11.7%, or some 178,000 TEUs to 1,695,000 TEUs, and imports to Japan, 7.9%, or 133,000 TEUs to 1,811,000 TEUs.
