Container volumes handled at Chinese ports totaled 12.439 million TEUs in May, representing a 21.9% increase over the same month in 2009 amidst a strong 49% increase in the nation's foreign trade. The figure is 16.6% higher compared even with the volume for May 2008 and also hit an all-time monthly high.

For the first five months of the year, box traffic in China surged 22.5% on year to 56.273 million TEUs. Of the total, coastal ports handled 50.746 million TEUs, up 22.2% from a year before while inland river ports processed 5.532 million TEUs, up 25.3% year on year.
