Container cargo shipped from Asia to Europe made a double-digit year-on-year increase of 10.57% to 1,126,400 TEUs in January 2010, according to the Brussels-based European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA). Compared with the figure recorded in January 2008 when the global economy had not yet plunged into crisis, this year's result was 8.8% lower.
On the eastbound trade from Europe to Asia, box volumes surged 34.9% from a year earlier to 818,800 TEUs.
On the transatlantic trade, westbound container traffic grew 4.49% on year to 207,800 TEUs while eastbound containers increased 6.92% to 207,700 TEUs.
All trade routes combined, Europe's import containers rose 10.78% from a year before to 1,706,000 TEUs while export boxes soared 22.44% to 1,084,900 TEUs.
