The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan signed on an official document on March 1 for providing a grant aid of \467 million to Uzbekistan for anti-terrorism and other security efforts.

Located at the center of central Asia, the republic is often used as a stopover place through which drugs, weapons and other illegal commodities are smuggled to Russia and Afghanistan.

To keep such items from coming into the country, customs officers unpack cargoes manually at the national boarders, but their activity sometimes leads to generating truck congestions.

As such, with the financial support from Tokyo, which will be offered under the Project for the Installation of X-ray Scanning Equipment at the Check Points of Uzbekistan Borders with the Neighboring Countries, portable large X-ray inspection devices will be installed for faster and safer customs services.

The devices are expected to reduce the amount of time consumed for customs inspections, which is as long as three hours to five hours now, to approximately 20 minutes to 30 minutes.
