Exports from Japan to China increased 6.5% from a year earlier to 1,036,308 tons in June, registering the first year-on-year improvement in two months, according to a report on container movement between the two economies released on Aug. 22 by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In terms value, they surged 24.4% to \717.8 billion, enjoying a year-on-year rise for the eighth consecutive month.
Meanwhile, container imports from China to Japan were also brisk, growing 8.3% to 1,965,187 tons, achieving a year-on-year expansion for three months in a row. On a value basis, they swelled 7.6% to \1.057 trillion.
In the first half (January-June), container movement was robust in both directions, with those from Japan to China going up 2.6% from the corresponding six month of 2016 to 2,984,910 tons, and those from China to Japan, up 6.7% to 5,751,503 tons.
According to indices unveiled by Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd., the freight rate for containers from Yokohama to Shanghai was US$360 per TEU in June, hiking 12.2% and marking a year-on-year rise for 10 straight months. The fare for shipments from Shanghai to Yokohama, meanwhile, inflated 3.4% to $610 per TEU.
