The throughput of oceangoing containerized shipments moved to and from the Port of Yokohama in the first quarter (January-March) of this year grew 4.8% year on year to 622,500 TEUs on a preliminary basis. Exports increased 5.3% to 325,000 TEUs, exceeding imports, which improved 4.2% to 298,000 TEUs.
In March alone, exports, imports and the total were all brisk, going up 6.7% to 122,500 TEUs, up 6.1% to 113,000 TEUs and up 6.5% to 236,000 TEUs.
Looking at the first-quarter total by trade route, 76,000 TEUs were carried to and from the west coast of North America, which jumped 41.4% to 76,000 TEUs, and 150,000 TEUs to and from China, which rose 5.9%. In contrast, exports to and imports from South Korea fell 9.6% to 28,000 TEUs, while those to and from Southeast Asia declined 5.3% to 197,600 TEUs. Containers to and from the east coast of North America were also sluggish, waning 3.2% to 9,122 TEUs. On the other hand, those to and from Nakhodka surged 29% to 711 TEUs.
