Total volume of oceangoing containerized shipments handled at ports in Taiwan increased 1.8%, or 270,000 TEUs year on year to 14.76 million TEUs in 2016, according to the Department of Statistics of the economy’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). However, throughput fell 1.4% to 10.41 million TEUs at the Port of Kaohsiung.

Containers moved in direct services between Taiwan and China grew 1.3%, or 30,000 TEUs to a new yearly record of 1.54 million TEUs. Kaohsiung enjoyed the largest share of the pie, processing 1.36 million TEUs, which was followed by Keelung, which handled 550,000 TEUs, and Taichung, 510,000 TEUs. The top three ports held a combined share of 95%.

A total of 13.8 million TEUs were moved to and from free trade zones (FTZs), which surged 57.3%. Taichung was responsible for 11.8 million tons, which soared 69.6% and accounting for 85.1% of the total.
