Container exports from Japan to China surged 15.9% from a year earlier to 1,120,539 tons in December 2016, according to a report compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from statistical data on trade unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). The total value soared 12.1% to \723 billion. They marked year-on-year growth for the second consecutive month in both volume and value.

Meanwhile, imports from China to Japan increased 4.3% to 1,829,558 tons, which also swelled year on year for two months in a row. On the other hand, they were sluggish on a value scale, falling 9.5% to \1.005 trillion, suffering a year-on-year decline for nine consecutive months.

In 2016, containers from Japan to China amounted to 11,239,769 tons, which remained nearly unchanged from the previous year, while those from China to Japan sank a minute 0.2% to 21.380,414 tons.
