Major shipping companies in April handled a total of 1.222 million TEUs of containerized shipments among 13 countries and regions in Asia, which increased 2.5% from a year earlier and registered a year-on-year improvement for two months in a row. In the first four months (January-April), the total throughput reached 4.86 million TEUs, which rose 4% from the corresponding term of 2015.

In April, Japan exported 129,300 TEUs, which suffered a double-digit decrease of 14.1%; on the other hand, imports improved 2.5% to 179,000 TEUs. In the first four months, outbound containers plunged 11.9% to 509,000 TEUs, but inbound containers were brisk, growing 4.5% to 742,000 TEUs.
