The combined volume of international multimodal cargo that members of Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc. (JIFFA) moved to and from Japan in the second half of fiscal 2015 (October 2015-March 2016) was 53.556 million revenue tons (R/T), which increased 2.1% from a year earlier, according to a report unveiled by the association. It was the second largest throughput on a six-month scale after the 54.937 million R/T registered in the first half of fiscal 2014.

The JIFFA report was compiled from valid responses made by 453 member forwarders during a survey that it had conducted.

Consequently, the total throughput for fiscal 2015 was 106.013 million R/T, which fell 1.3% year on year. Although declining slightly from a year earlier, it was the second highest volume on a yearly basis, following the record high reached in the previous fiscal year. In breakdown, exports from Japan fell 3.7% to 38.926 million R/T due to sluggishness in those to newly industrialized economies, while imports improved 0.1% to 67.087 million R/T.

The top five trade partners to Japan in fiscal 2015 were as follows. China continued to be Japan’s leading partner, to and from which 40.965 million R/T of international multimodal shipments were carried, waning 1.6% from a year earlier. China was followed by the U.S., to and from which 9.443 million R/T were exported and imported, which shrank 2.1%. A total of 7.725 million R/T were transported to and from South Korea, increasing 4.6%. Outbound cargo to and inbound cargo from Europe decreased 0.2% to 7.345 million R/T in total. Japan exported and imported a total of 6.707 million R/T to and from Thailand, which grew 2%.
