The combine volume of containerized shipments that major shipping lines moved among 13 countries and regions in Asia in the first quarter (January-March) of this year increased 3.1% from a year earlier to 3.639 million TEUs, rebounding from February, when the volume suffered a year-on-year decrease for the first two months. Exports from Japan to the 12 other economies in the region fell 9.2% to 401,000 TEUs, but in contrast, imports rose 3.6% to 572,000 TEUs.

In March alone, intra-Asia container movement grew 5.6% from the corresponding month of 2015 to 1,276 million TEUs. Containers from Japan declined 7.1% to 148,000 TEUs, while those to Japan waned 2.1% to 189,000 TEUs.

Looking at containers shipped from Japan in the first three month by destination, those to China went down 22.5% to 133,000 TEUs; to Taiwan, down 6.3% to 47,000 TEUs; to Thailand, down 3% to 46,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, down 6.1% to 33,000 TEUs; to Vietnam, up 1.8% to 25,000 TEUs; to Indonesia, down 4% to 25,000 TEUs; to Malaysia, up 5.9% to 24,000 TEUs; to the Philippines, up 8.3% to 12,000 TEUs and to Singapore, down 16% to 9,000 TEUs.

As for containerized shipment to Japan, those from China were up 3.6% to 572,000 TEUs; from Thailand, down 9.2% to 50,000 TEUs; from Taiwan, down 10.8% to 44,000 TEUs; from Vietnam, up 3.6% to 33,000 TEUs; from Indonesia, down 6.7% to 33,000 TEUs; from the Philippines, up 38.4% to 23,000 TEUs; from Malaysia, down 10.6% to 21,000 TEUs; from Hong Kong, down 13.3% to 21,000 TEUs and from Singapore, up 9.2% to 10,000 TEUs.
