Container exports from Japan to China decreased 9.2% year on year to 901,589 tons in August, according to a report on container movement between the two Asian economies released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Imports from China to Japan were also sluggish, falling 6.4% to 1,741,601 tons. On a value scale, outbound shipments managed to improve, growing a minute 0.2% to \608.9 billion, while inbound containers decreased 4.1% to \1.062 trillion.

Freight rates for containers from Yokohama to Shanghai have been fluctuating in the range of $360-370 per TEU since reaching a peak in February. The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) made an upward turn in September, after continuing to go down from April.
