The Port of Osaka handled a total of 43.87 million tons of shipments in the first half (January-June) of 2014, growing 3.9% year on year, according to preliminary figures unveiled recently. In breakdown, throughput was favorable in both international and domestic cargo, which increased 4.1% to 18.24 million tons and 3.8% to 25.63 million tons, respectively.

As for containerized freight, exports and imports totaled 16.06 million tons, hiking 4.3%. In terms of TEU, they amounted to 1,082,189 TEUs, improving 4.5%. They were greater by 4.5% than in the first half of 2013, when they reached an all-time high of 2.13 million TEUs on an annual scale. Oceangoing containers could set a new yearly record if they remain as brisk in the second half. On the other hand, domestic containers decreased 3.5% to 1,012,770 tons; in terms of TEU, they fell 7.2% to 134,140 TEUs.

Looking at international containers more precisely, exports went up 7% to 492,095 TEUs, and imports, up 2.5% to 590,093 TEUs. As for domestic containers, 93,767 TEUs were outbound, going down 7.8%, and 40,374 TEUs were inbound, down 5.8%.

The combined volume of international and domestic containers was 1,216,329 TEUs, rising 3%.
