The Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee has reported that 64 container ports in Japan handled a total of 17,765,642 TEUs of containers in 2013, going up 1.4% from the previous year. The Big Five ports (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) were responsible for 13,714,428 TEUs, up 0.5%. Overall container throughput at the 12 leading ports (the Big Five and seven other major ports including Shimizu and Hakata) was 15,699,634 TEUs, up 0.5%. The remaining 52 local ports processed 2,066,007 TEUs in total, up 8.9%.

A total of 5,609,159 TEUs of loaded containers were imported to and exported from the nation’s 64 ports, up 0.2%. Those to and from the 12 major ports accounted for 5,049,012 TEUs, down 1.2%, while the balance of 560,147 TEUs were moved to and from the 52 local ports, up 15.1%. To the 64 ports, 8,366,028 TEUs of full containers were imported, up 2.2%. In breakdown, 7,471,239 TEUs were transported to the 12 ports, up 1.9%, and 894,969 TEUs to and from the 52 ports, up 5.2%.
