According to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Thailand's Department of Trade Negotiations is slashing the import duty for 80 items of Japanese auto parts to 0% with retroactive effect from April 1, 2012 under the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA). The items to benefit from this measure include gear boxes, safety belts, clutches, brakes, exhaust pipe, etc. The tariff cut will take effect retroactive to April 1, 2012.

The free trade pact was signed in April 2007 and went into force on November 1, 2007 with an aim to eliminate tariffs on more than 90 percent of bilateral trade within 10 years. With regard to Japanese auto parts, the import duty for 100 auto parts from Japan was to be abolished after the completion of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). The import duty for the remaining 20 automotive parts including engines and engine parts is slated to be decreased to zero on April 1, 2014.
