Ports in China handled a total of 20.643 million TEUs of containers in August, which increased 8% from a year earlier, according to a report compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Coastal ports were responsible for 18.285 million TEUs, which grew 6.9%, while container throughput was much more brisk at inland river ports, amounting to 2.358 million TEUs in total, which surged 17.4%.
In the first eight months (January-August), 156.181 million TEUs were traded to and from China, which hiked 8.8% year on year. In breakdown, 138.47 million TEUs were shipped to and from coastal ports, which climbed 7.9%, and 17.712 million TEUs to and from inland river ports, which soared 16.5%.
Focusing on major coastal ports, container lifting decreased 2% at Lianyungang, but was favorable across the board at other trade ports. In particular, Ningbo-Zhoushan and Guangzhou both marked double-digit improvements of 13.4% and 11.6%, respectively.
