The combined volume of containerized shipments that South Korea exported to and imported from Japan in 2014 (including empty containers) was 1,796,316 TEUs, growing a slight 0.9% year on year, according to the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC). Outbound containers from South Korea were weak due to the depreciation of the Japanese yen, but managed to increase a minute 0.2% to 1,035,184 TEUs. Meanwhile, incoming shipments were also sluggish, but they were greater in terms of growth, rising 1.8% to 746,074 TEUs.

As for local shipments, exports from South Korea went up 1% to 410,490 TEUs, and imports, up 5% to 322,264 TEUs for a total of 732,754 TEUs, up 2.7%.

Feeder containers were stagnant in both directions, with those from South Korea falling 5.1% to 206,559 TEUs and those to South Korea declining 0.4% to 197,121 TEUs. The total waned 2.8% to 403,680 TEUs.

Looking at transshipment (T/S) cargo, South Korea’s exports improved 2.2% to 420,097 TEUs, but imports diminished 0.6% to 239,785 TEUs. The total grew a mild 1.2% to 659,882 TEU.
