U.S. research company Descartes DataMyne recently announced that a total of 1,450,192 TEUs of containers were exported to the U.S. from 10 countries and regions in Asia in September, which grew a steady 6.5% from a year earlier and posted a year-on-year improvement for the 19th consecutive month. In January-September, 12,253,032 TEUs were moved, which swelled 6.3% to set a new record for the nine months in question.

Looking at containers shipped out of Asia in September more specifically by origin, those from China increased 4.2% to 921,194 TEUs, holding the largest share of the pie, according to statistics compiled by Descartes DataMyne from Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and bill of lading (B/L) data provided by the U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection (CBP). They turned upward, coming back from suffering a year-on-year contraction in the previous month, and accounted for 63.5%, shrinking from 70%. Ranked second were exports from South Korea, which surged 21.9% to 155,806 TEUs. As for others, those from Vietnam soared 23.9% to 72,779 TEUs. Containers from Taiwan rose 5.5% to 68,547 TEUs, followed by those from Taiwan, which amounted to 56,931 TEUs, down 14%. Exports from Japan fell 5.6% to 36,971 TEUs, stepping down to eighth place.

Containers from Japan that transshipped in other economies remained on an upward trend, swelling 14.4% to 8,617 TEUs and holding a share of 19%. Those transshipped in South Korea jumped 47.4% to 7,903 TEUs.
