India's Ministry of Shipping is allegedly mulling over the annulment of the direct port delivery (DPD) scheme which started last year with the Nhava Sheva port.

The scheme allows consignees to receive their shipments straight from the container yard within 48 hours of discharging from the vessel without holding them at a container freight station (CFS). CFS operators which should have been beleaguered by the new system had claimed that the DPD operation has not been working effectively.

In a bid to reduce backlogs and shorten dwell times, the ministry plans to remodel the cargo retrieving scheme at the port. The new model focuses on restoring the role of CFS operators truckers as a facilitator in the supply chain and expediting cargo clearance as well as reducing logistics costs.
