Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. (NRIC) on Sept. 14 unveiled a revision of its economic and cargo transport forecasts for fiscal 2015 (April 2015-March 2016). A downward adjustment had been made in exports of maritime cargo, while a similar action had been taken in airfreight as well.

NRIC now anticipates that exports of oceangoing containerized shipments from Japan’s Big Eight trade ports will decrease 0.3% from a year earlier to 4.91 million TEUs in fiscal 2015 due to sluggishness in those to other nations in Asia. Imports are projected to decline 2.1% to 6.957 million TEUs, as personal consumption is recovering slower than expected. The total is estimated to amount to 11.867 million TEUs, down 1.3%. The think tank foresees that shipments to Europe and the U.S. will improve steadily on a yearly scale, but does not think they will be powerful enough to make up for sluggishness in those to other Asian economies. As such, it now envisages the mild year-on-year fall.

NRIC believed that exports of airfreight will wane 6.4% to 968,500 tons this fiscal year, predicting the special demand for cargo on the trans-Pacific route will diminish, and that freight movement to other Asian nations will also go down. Imports are foreseen to fall 4.4% to 1.036 million tons owing to a slump in those of consumer goods, among other factors, suffering a year-on-year decrease for the fourth consecutive year. The total is estimated to shrink 5.4% to 2.004 million tons.
