India’s dockworkers have been warning nationwide work stoppage in protest against the 2016 Major Ports Authority Bill which the government has worked out to replace with the existing Major Port Trusts Act 1963 with an aim to reform the nation’s public port system.

Representatives of the unions at India’s major 12 container ports which control almost 70% of the nation’s containerized imports and exports recently met at New Delhi and voted to stage an indefinite strike from April 19.

The dockworkers unions walked off their job in September 2016 against the privatization of the ports.
