Transpacific Box Trade Shows Sign of Recovery

Container movement from 18 Asian countries and territories to the U.S. showed signs of picking up in October 2009, topping a 1-million-TEU mark for the three consecutive months.

Eastbound transpacific box volume declined 7.9% to 1.101 million TEUs in October 2009. Though resulted in negative growth again, the figure is the best for the year.

On the westbound leg in the transpacific trade, volume showed a double-digit increase of 14.1%, to 523,000 TEUs in October.

For the first 10 months, eastbound container traffic from Asia to the U.S. totaled 9.412 million TEUs, down 17.2% from the corresponding period in 2008 while westbound volume fell 7.3% on year to 4.93 million TEUs.
