A total of 13,988,069 TEUs of containers were traded worldwide in June 2018, swelling 2.1% from June 2017 and posting a year-on-year improvement for the ninth consecutive month, according to statistics compiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K. The global freight rate index (the average in 2008=100 points) was 67 points, which grew by one point from a month earlier and achieved a month-on-month increase for two months in a row. From a year earlier, however, it was lower by three points from 70.

More precisely, imports to and exports from the Far East both turned upward for the first time in two months, with the former hiking 2.4% to 5,521,186 TEUs, and the latter climbing 0.8% to 7,999,722 TEUs. Europe’s imports and exports were both brisk, inflating 3.1% to 2,753,658 TEUs and 8.7% to 2,448,886 TEUs. Imports to North America went up 3.3% to 2,403,652 TEUs, but exports from the region shrank 1.1% to 1,278,421 TEUs.
