The Organisation for Co-operation between Railways (OSJD) unanimously approved admission of the Republic of Korea at its Ministerial Conference being held from June 5 at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

OSJD was founded in 1956 in Sophia, Bulgaria by representatives of ministries and bodies responsible for railway transport from 12 countries including Russia (then the Soviet Union), China and North Korea.

With the admission of South Korea, the association’s official membership totals 29 countries operating railways in Eurasia.

South Korea had attempted repeatedly to join the railway organization but in vain due to repeated objections from North Korea.
