According to the Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, International Maritime Organization, IMO, adopted the "Green House Gas, GHG Reduction Strategy" that set measures to mitigate shipping greenhouse gas emissions at Marine Environment Protection Committee, MEPC 72, held in London April 10 to 13. The members finally agreed on the draft based on Japan’s proposal including future vision, strategy, goal, measures.

The strategy is to: (1) improve fuel efficiency by 40% by 2030 compared with 2008, halve GHG emissions by 2050, ultimately aim for zero GHG emissions during this century (2) In terms of both side hard and software, member should promote energy saving and disseminate new fuel from a long-term perspective (concrete measures will be decided in the future) (3) Taking measures in common way to both developed and developing countries without distinction of registry of ships. However, three points are essential, such as providing necessary technical cooperation to developing countries and others.

The world's first committed to aiming zero GHG emissions during the century in specific category. In the future members will study implementation methods and agreed to review in 2023.
