The Japan Maritime Center (JMC) has announced that 882,650 tons of containerized shipments were exported from Japan to China in November 2017, which declined 8.8% from a year earlier and suffered a year-on-year decrease for three months in a row. Wood pulp/waste paper and plastic products were responsible for the volume contraction. On a value scale, however, they surged 24.8% to \748.2 billion, enjoying a double-digit improvement for 10 straight months.
Meanwhile, imports from China to Japan rose 3.5% to 1,989,279 tons, accomplishing a year-on-year increase for two back-to-back months, the JMC added. They swelled in value terms as well, soaring 15.5% to \1.215 trillion.
As for freight rates, containers were moved from Yokohama to Shanghai at a rate of $380 per TEU, which fell 2.6%, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd. indices, while rates for those from Shanghai to Yokohama were $610 per TEU, which hiked 7%.
