Container volumes at major ports in Asia increased year on year across the board in 2017, thanks to steady growth in the global economy.

Shanghai handled 40.232 million TEUs last year, up8.3%, becoming the first port in the world to process a total of more than 40 million TEUs on a yearly scale and the world’s busiest container port for the eighth consecutive year. In December alone, containers to and from the port rose 8.8% to 3.357 million TEUs.

Containers amounted to 33.667 million TEUs at Singapore in 2017, up 8.9%, which was the second highest yearly performance at the port, following 33.869 million TEUs in 2014. In December, they swelled 7% to 2.956 million TEUs.

Containers to and from Hong Kong climbed 4.8% to 20.755 million TEUs last year, registering the first year-on-year expansion in six years and exceeding the 20-million-TEU line for the first time in two years. Last month, however, they plunged 10.6% to 1.772 million TEUs.
