Outbound container movement from Asia to the U.S. registered a year-on-year increase for the fourth consecutive month in January and make a new record for the month in question, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). More specifically, 18 countries and regions in Asia exported 1,352,497 TEUs to the U.S., which grew 4%.

Looking at last month's eastbound container traffic by origin, exports from China swelled 5% to 901,341 TEUs, achieving a year-on-year improvement for four months in a row. Those from Vietnam surged 20.3% to an all-time high of 91,632 TEUs. Containers from India were also favorable, inflating 8.1% to 47,958 TEUs. In contrast, exports from other economies were stagnant, for example, with those from Japan decreasing 8% to 43,714 TEUs, suffering the first year-on-year decline in two months. Those from South Korea diminished 8% to 59,079 TEUs, incurring the first year-on-year fall in three months. Containers from Taiwan sank 2.4% to 51,766 TEUs. Those from Singapore marked a double-digit contraction of 19.5%, amounting to 7,516 TEUs. Exports from Malaysia went down 9% to 21,286 TEUs, while those from Indonesia headed south 1.1% to 30,019 TEUs.
