Container movement between South Korea and Southeast Asia increased in both directions in the first five months (January-May) of this year, according to a report compiled by an organization of South Korean carrier providing liner services to and from Southeast Asia. In detail, exports from South Korea went up 2.85% from a year earlier to 519,314 TEUs, and imports, up 1.96% to 454,933 TEUs.

By route, containers to and from Vietnam grew 9.28% to a total of 143,971 TEUs, while those to and from Singapore increased most steeply, surging 10.68% to 26,488 TEUs. Shipments to and from Indonesia rose 9% to 67,528 TEUs; to and from the Philippines, 5.93% to 32,506 TEUs and to and from Thailand, 2.9% to 52,242 TEUs.

On the other hand, containers to and from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan were all weak, falling 4.78% to 107,625 TEUs, 7.26% to 46,133 TEUs and 0.3% to 42,812 TEUs, respectively.

Of the containerized shipments exported from South Korea in the five months, overseas shipping lines were responsible for 156,392 TEUs, holding a market share of 30.12%.
