Global container movement is projected to increase approximately 5% year on year in 2014 and 5 to 6% in 2015, according to a report released on Dec. 12 by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). By trade, it is expected to go up some 5% in 2014 and up 6% in 2015 on the eastbound trade to North America, and up 5.6% in 2014 and 4 to 5% in 2015 on the westbound trade to Europe. Meanwhile, the completion of newbuildings is foreseen to peak in 2015 at approximately 1.84 million TEUs and fall below one million TEUs in 2016. As such, NYK expects the balance between tonnage supply and demand will improve accordingly.

The 2014 edition of NYK’s annual report on the transport of containerized shipments and the deployment of containerships worldwide indicated that as of the end of August 2014, 5,078 containerships of 17.841 million TEUs in total were in operation. From a year earlier, the number grew by five, and the capacity, by 960,000 TEUs, or 5.7%. Ultra-large container carriers boasting a capacity of more than 10,000 TEUs each amounted to 244, increasing by 30 from the end of August 2013, while their combined container capacity amounted to 3.169 million TEUs. By trade, 23% of such gigantic containerships were deployed on the route between Asia and Europe, and 16% on the route to and from North America. The number of over-10,000-TEU container carriers rose by 33 on the route to and from Europe, and as such, the average capacity of those operated in services to and from Europe reached 10,548 TEUs.

The NYK report added that 459 containerships of 3.38 million TEUs in total were on order worldwide as of the end of August. It is scheduled that in 2014, 217 newbuildings of 1,581,741 TEUs will be completed; in 2015, 249 of 1,844,998 TEUs; in 2016, 116 of 914,133 TEUs; and in and after 2017, 20 of 118,430 TEUs. It is expected that container freighters having a capacity of over 10,000 TEUs each will account for 53.4% in 2014, 50.7% in 2015, 64.3% in 2016 and 47.3% in and after 2017. As these figures indicated, NYK anticipated the completion of newbuildings will reach a peak in 2015.
