A total of US$168.301 billion worth of goods were traded between Japan and China in the first half (January-June) of 2014, growing 4.4% year on year, according to a report compiled by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Trade between the two economies came back from a year earlier, when it incurred a double-digit decrease, but was not as robust as it was in the first half of 2012—before activists in China staged anti-Japan demonstrations in September. Shipments from Japan to China went up 2.5% to $77.995 billion, and those from China to Japan, up 6.1% to $90.305 billion. Imports were almost as massive as they were two years earlier, but exports did not recover as powerfully as expected. As a consequence, Japan’s trade deficit with China swelled 37% to an all-time high of $12.31 billion.
