Japan exported 981,417 tons of containerized shipments to China in May, which plunged 13.3% from the corresponding month of 2013, according to a report released on July 16 by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Meanwhile, imports from China to Japan decreased 4.6% to 1,911,862 tons. On a value scale, outbound containers amounted to \588.9 billion, going up 0.1%, and inbound shipments, at \1.104 trillion, up 0.5%.

The JMC said that freight rates for services from Yokohama to Shanghai have been on the decline, fluctuating between $360 and $370 per TEU since peaking in February last year. The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) indicated that fares for services from China to Japan were on an upward trend for a while after the turn of 2014 but has been on a downward track since April.
