The Port of Kobe processed 48.94 million tons of oceangoing cargo in 2013, which remained nearly unchanged from the previous year. Domestic freight increased 3% to 39.42 million tons. The total volume at the port went up 1% to 88.35 million tons, registering a year-on-year improvement for the fourth consecutive year.

As regards containerized shipments, 2.05 million TEUs were carried to and from overseas ports, which fell 1% from a year earlier, and 500,000 TEUs to and from other domestic ports, which rose 2%. Overall container lifting at Kobe declined 1% to 2.55 million TEUs, suffering a mild contraction for two years in a row, or since 2012.

Focusing on oceangoing cargo, exports went down 3% year on year to 21.62 million tons. In contrast, imports inflated 2% to 27.32 million tons. As for containers, exports diminished 4.7% to 15.96 million tons, but imports climbed 1.5% to 18.45 million tons. In terms of number, outbound containers waned 1.8% to 1.098 million TEUs, and inbound containers, 0.2% to 950,000 TEUs.
